Baltiisky Zavod, of the United Industrial Corporation, has launched an ocean Ro Pax vessel.
The lead vessel was built for the Fosen Mekaniske Verksteder A/S (Norway) shipyard. The modern ocean ferry is intended for carrying trailers and passengers in the North Sea. It will be operated by Stena RoRo, a division of the Stena AB (Sweden) holding company.
The contract for two
The shipyard is building a second vessel of the same series for the Norwegian shipyard at the same slipway with the lead Ro Pax. This became possible because the slipway is the largest in Russia and is capable of accommodating up to 40,000 tonnes. Immediately after the launch of the lead Ro Pax, shipyard specialists will set out to lower the second vessel. With the help of special winches hull assemblies will be lowered down the slipway in order to continue the construction.
Note
An ocean Ro Pax is a vessel with five cargo decks and three hoistable ramps. The vessel is 212m long, 26.7m wide, side height is 15.5m. The weight of the entire steel structure, including fixtures, is 8,000 tonnes. The Ro Pax vessel has a special hull shape, which is typical of military vessels, in order to boost the speed.
