The Russian banking system suffered a loss of Rub 23.6 bln in January 2015 compared to profit of Rub 94.6 bln in the year-ago period, show financial statements posted on the Bank of Russia's website.
This January 242 lending institutions posted losses, with aggregate monthly losses equaling Rub 110.1 bln. In the year-earlier period 208 banks saw red ink (up 16.3%), with an aggregate loss of Rub 8.8 bln (up 12.5x).
Record profit in January was posted by Alfa-Bank (Rub 30.09 bln), Raiffeisenbank (Rub 3.78 bln), Sberbank of Russia (Rub 3.75 bln), CentroCredit (Rub 3.66 bln) and Citibank (Rub 2.73 bln).
The country's Top 5 banks in terms of losses in January are SB Bank (down Rub 12.21 bln), the Bank of Moscow (Rub -11.27 bln), Rost Bank (Rub -10.20 bln), VTB Bank (Rub -8.96 bln), and Gazprombank (Rub -7.85 bln).
